ヤマハ発動機は、電動アシスト・スポーツ自転車ブランドとなる、ＹＰＪワイピージェイを、新たに立ち上げた。
電動アシスト･ロードバイク、ＹＰＪ-R ワイピージェイアールを、第一弾として、2015年12月10日より発売すると発表。
新ブランドとなる、ＹＰＪは、スポーツ自転車の長所と電動アシスト機能のメリットを融合させた、新感覚の電動アシスト自転車を象徴するというもの。
新発売のロードバイクＹＰＪ－Rは、軽さと高い走行性能を備えたことが特徴。
搭載されているドライブユニットは、プレジャーニーズの高い欧州市場で、好評を得ている小型の、PWシリーズを搭載している。
ヤマハ製の、電動アシスト自転車の中では最軽量となる、約１５kgの車体重量を実現。
アシストのない領域でもスポーツ自転車としての快適な走行が可能な設計となっている。
メインコンポーネントには、前2段×後11段の本格スポーツグレードSHIMANO 105を採用。
新開発の小型バッテリーは、走行時以外には付属である、USBアダプターにより、スマートフォンなどの電子機器の充電用電源として使用することができる。
充電器は携行を想定し、コンパクト設計で、ハンドル中央部のスイッチユニットにはマイクロUSBポートを装備しており、別売のとなるライトや、スマートフォンなどの電子機器への給電が可能となっている。
発表されたデータによると、バッテリーの容量は2.4Ahで、約1時間の充電のHIGHモードで、約14kmの走行距離を、電動アシストする可能という。
